Entrepreneur's Algorithm: Risk is Everything
Children have an intuitive understanding of danger. They recognize it, have an impulse reaction, and at some point, start storing memories of how to deal/not deal with it. It takes a long time, some never get there, to perceive danger, threats, uncertainties, as fights, chances, and opportunities. But if we are to be or do anything, some version of this courage is required. The extent of the courage, the skepticism accompanied with it, and the fuel to keep going, decides what gets made, who makes it, and how successfully.
Entrepreneurs have an intuitive understanding of risks. To them, every threat has an upside, and every opportunity has downsides. It begins with identifying what to build. Every enterprise takes on a basic risk of losing resources, but the entrepreneur identifies if it is worth it or not. Usually there is some asymmetric information at play, a unique insight, an inherent advantage (in land, labor, capital). These are all employed to assess risk. Whether the industry has large enough profit pools? Is the downside capped? Do I have what it takes? If a satisfactory answer is reached, the entrepreneur plunges in, taking on the challenge, and beginning an ultimate exercise in risk.
Strategy is the art of deciding which risks to absorb and which to avoid entirely. A filtration system, sorting the winnable battles from the unwinnables. Poor strategists absorb risks they do not understand and avoid the very risks that would make them indispensable. Master strategists, however, know exactly which uncertainties belong on their own shoulders. Knowing the difference is the game.
Codify these differences. Every operating procedure, every supply chain redundancy, every financial hedge is a historical record of a past danger recognized and neutralized. The day-to-day grind is the active suppression of execution risk, ensuring that the original leap of faith is not destroyed by corporate entropy. Every stated core value, every rigorous hiring filter, every unwritten ritual is a scaling up of the entrepreneur's risk algorithm. The day-to-day enforcement of culture is the active suppression of strategic drift, ensuring that the original leap of faith is not dissolved by scaling entropy. Operations and Culture will allow for risk optimization.
The greatest paradox in enterprise is that the complete elimination of risk is the most dangerous position of all. A system stripped of uncertainty becomes fragile, susceptible to invisible swans and visible hawks. Eliminate risk, and you eliminate all incentive to innovate. Idea generation is critical to inject new calculated risks and to manage them. That is the way. The objective is not to beat the game, you lose if you believe so, it is to continue playing the game. And in the process, convert the unknown into enduring value.
